Little Gardeners project started when in December 2018, the home was visited by a volunteer, Jana. She noticed that the home has an unused plot suitable for a vegetable garden.
The next day, Jana and the children started turning the plot into a vegetable garden. They raked the soil, planted seedlings and seeds, bought watering cans and started watering it. They planted high-yield nutritious local vegetables such as sukuma-wiki, amaranth, and spinach.
The deal was that if the children take care of the garden, they would continue receiving presents, supply of yogurt. Lo behold, little gardeners were born.
Instead of their lives being solely dependent of donations, the children are learning a reciprocal relation of giving and receiving. While the are gaining new skills, they are becoming empowered, proud and strong.
